Thesis title:
Assessing Maternal Mortality in Afabet Sub-District Northern Red Sea Zone, Eritrea

Short summary:
One of the objectives of this study was to assess the maternal mortality ratio of maternal mortality and
lifetime risk of maternal mortality, in the sub-district Afabet, Northern Red Sea Zone, Eritrea. For this -, part of the study, the quantitative method was used, by employing the indirect technique of the sisterhood method through a retrospective cross-sectional household survey.
The second objective of this study was to identify some of the causes of why women are dying of pregnancy related causes in Afabet, by interviewing key informants, and reviewing medical records. The method used for this part was the qualitative interview. This part of the study was based on data collection at household site through informal and formal communication and interviewing using semi-structured interview guides.
The results of the qualitative study have showed that the high maternal mortality ratio was compounded with high fertility, and other possible risk factors like early marriage, early pregnancy, and harmful traditional practice like infibulation and reinfibultion that were common in the study area. In addition the high maternal mortality is also associated with lack of emergency obstetric services, communication, transport, and delays on referral system. These risk factors might contribute to the observed high level of maternal mortality indicators.
The total time period for the survey was three months from the 18th of June to the 30th of September 1999. This study is intended to generate base line information for health planners and other further studies.
